AF YMCA Aquatic Program
The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is a water exercise program designed for people with arthritis and related conditions. Water exercise is especially good for people with arthritis, because it allows you to exercise without putting excess strain on your joints and muscles. AFAP gives the opportunity to do gentle activities in the warm water with guidance from a trained, certified Instructor. Although it is a non-clinical program, it may result in some physical benefits, such as decreased pain and stiffness. The AFAP also provides a friendly and supportive atmosphere where participants can make new friends and try new activities without fear of failure. This social interaction can help decrease feeling of depression and isolation while progress in the aquatic activities can lead to independence and improved self-esteem. Advance level AFAP Plus is available to those who are ready for a more vigorous program.
Who can participate? Any adult with arthritis may join the AFAP. It is not necessary to know how to swim. Peopl with multiple or sever joint problems or who have joint surgery are encouraged to check with their doctors about the need for special precautions.
Where are classes held? The AFAP is held in an indoor pool with a water temperature of 83-88 degrees. The pool should have easy access, ( i.e. stairs with a railing or ramp and be deep enough (about 4 feet) for class participants to stand comfortably with shoulders submerged when doing upper extremity exercises). If the Pool is shallow, provisions may be made for sitting in the water.
Benefits of Water Aerobic Exercise:
